How far past the roof should gutters extend.
When installing metal roof panels it s important to keep in mind the conditions your roof will need to face in the future.
I read that the start of a gutter needs to be low enough that if you took a level and laid it on the roof it should clear the front edge of the gutter.
In almost every instance gutter installers take the path of least resistance and shove the gutter right underneath the roof shingles instead.
The water should roll off these shingles and drop straight down into the gutter.
Depending on the climate you live in the resulting weather patterns and the way your panels are installed the required amount of metal roof overhang will differ.
This way any snow sliding off would clear the gutter and not damage it.
And you run the flashing up under the roof shingles and you make sure it extends past the roof shingles and lays into the top of the gutters.
In turn rainwater will run behind gutters that hang too high deteriorating the fascia boards along the way.
So essentially what you re doing is creating a bridge to make up the distance between where the shingle ended and where it really should have ended which is at the edge of the gutter.

You don t need more than 1 4 inch drop towards the downspout for every 10 feet legnth of gutter.
This is incorrect because rainwater pulls back up on the underside of the roof and it drips down under the roof.
Even though they look level from a distance gutters should be pitched slightly from one end to the other.
The shingles should extend past the top flange of the drip edge.
If wind blown rain or a very low slope roof conspire to force water back under the shingle eaves edge so it courses down the face of the drip edge it should be able to drip off the bottom kicker.
